Follow the progress of three giants of agricultural manufacturing as they begin to put down roots in the Construction and Industrial sector with this exciting collection of remarkable archive films from Massey Ferguson, Ford and International Harvester.
Man’s battles with the natural elements are demonstrated to the full in the films featured in part five of our Construction Collection DVD programmes.
From taming the new frontier in America’s West Coast, building the huge Glen Canyon Dam over the massive Colorado River to answering the need for conservation in Britain, International Harvester machines were there to answer the inevitable call and provide the best possible service.
We feature a wide range of IH machines in five un-edited films. From the new 270 pay-scraper to the massive TD30 dozers and the dependable 125 loaders to the huge PH180 haulers plus many more, all working hard to satisfy our demand for progress.
From industrial tractors to huge sophisticated machinery built to move the earth, the collection presents some of Massey Ferguson, IH & Ford’s most successful construction equipment and the innovations which enabled them to build sturdy foundations and cement their position among the world leaders in construction machinery manufacture.

Tribute to a Champion
At their peak the International Harvester Company was reputed to be the largest and most influential farm equipment manufacturer of the 20th century. These promotional and information films make up the second in a series of DVD programmes featuring mostly agricultural machinery but also includes large trucks and heavy plant manufactured by International Harvester - a reminder of their heyday in which all things seemed possible.
This DVD starts with a fabulous film providing thorough analysis of IH manufacturing in the 1970’s at Doncaster and their other sites in the UK. It’s a celebration of them winning their third Queen’s Award for Industry. Two up-to-the-minute British tractors are looked at in detail, the 454 & 574 models representing a brand new concept in farming. While we witness some bizarre machinery picking corn and explore the benefits of the 400 series balers.
Certainly International Harvester was a force to be reckoned with in the middle part of the 20th century and these old movies go a long way to capturing a flavour of that success.

Six archive films are included in this programme, two illustrating the progress the company had made up to that point and another showing the setting up and operation of a general purpose plough, following the techniques of good ploughing. There’s also a close-up look at some of the IH farm machinery of the day, including several baler models, combines and the very impressive 30 series tractors.

International at Doncaster: British production 1949-75
Based on their reliability and extensive product range, International tractors acquired a strong following among British farmers. They began production at Doncaster in 1949, and a gem in this programme is the first Farmall M off the Doncaster production line. The DVD covers in detail some 27 machines from the golden era of International production, showing the diversity of the marque up to the mid-1970s when the worldwide range was phased in. There are examples of the larger wheeled tractors produced at Doncaster as well as the smaller ones from the satellite Bradford plant. Tracked models are covered in detail. The tractors are all authentically restored or currently working versions selected for filming by Old Tractor magazine editor Stuart Gibbard. He shows them in action with appropriate implements throughout the seasons. Sadly, production at the Doncaster plant ended in 2007. As a finale, Stuart includes two special CXs: a Diamond edition and the last CX off the line. Stuart’s script is full of accurate information about the machines and the enthusiasts who have enabled this first DVD about the range to be made. This is a magnificent tribute to the glory of the British International years. |
